The Trial

[← back to /library]

Reread this last week. It's become one of my favorites, and it's one of those books that keeps giving you new meaning depending on what you bring to it.

Take the offices in the book. On the surface, it's just relatable: that exact suffocating feeling you get walking into a bank or a government office, the sense that no one in there is actually going to make it out fine. But sit with it longer and the whole thing starts reading as something about depression instead, and the book shifts completely. The condemnation stops being about bureaucracy and starts feeling like something a lot more internal.

I suspect this entry is going to keep changing every time I reread it, which feels appropriate for a book like this.
